60RELATIONSHIP OF SERUM URIC ACID AND NON-HDL CHOLESTEROL IN OBESE INDIVIDUALS IN RURAL POPULATIONTo estimate the levels of serum uric acid level and Non- HDL- Cholesterol in obese individuals, to elucidate the association between these biochemical parameters and obesity and to correlate the levels of serum uric acid levels with waist circumference and Body mass index in obesity. An observational study was designed to study 240 subjects who were aged 20 to 50 years and were living in a rural area. The study included 120 apparently healthy obese individuals (study group) with Body Mass Index of ≥ 25 and Waist Circumference more than 80 cm and 90 cm in females and males respectively. Another 120 individuals with BMI ≤ 25, WC less than 80 cm and 90 cm in females and males respectively were enrolled as controls. Uric acid, total cholesterol, HDL was measured in serum. Non-HDL-C was calculated by subtracting HDL from Total Cholesterol. Data were entered into the excel sheet and analyzed statistically using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 17. The mean value of serum uric acid in obese men and women were 7.57 mg/dl and 6.19 mg/dl which was higher than the mean of control group 4.17 mg/dl (males) and 4.10 mg/dl (females). Serum uric acid was strongly related to serum non-HDL-C in men as well as in women (r = 0.66 in men and r =0.63 in women, p < 0.001). Serum uric acid is correlated significantly with waist circumference (`r`=0.52, `p`=0.001) but poorly correlated with BMI (`r`= 0.18 ). Serum uric acid and non-HDL-Cholesterol were elevated in obese individuals indicating the marker for metabolic syndrome.
