132PREVALENCE OF LOWER URINARY TRACT INFECTION AND ITS BACTERIOLOGICAL PATTERN IN A TERTIARY CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL, PALAKKADUrinary tract infection is an acute or chronic infection, usually bacterial in origin; that may affect any part of the upper or lower urinary system.It occurs frequently in both community and hospital environments. The changing antimicrobial sensitivity in UTI demands use of appropriate antibiotics. To determine the prevalence of lower urinary tract infection and to analyse the bacteriological pattern in lower urinary tract infection in a specific geographical region. This is a prospective observational study conducted at Department of Urology in Karuna Medical College Hospital Chittur, Palakkad during a period of 6months from November 2017- April 2018.Clean catch midstream urine samples were collected from 107 patients presenting with symptoms of UTI to determine the prevalence of Lower urinary tract infection and the causative organism. Out of the 107patients who fit in the inclusion criteria, 100 patients (93.4%) were positive for urine culture. Prevalence of UTI is higher in females (65%) as compared to males (35%).Female patients in the age group 31-40 years and male patients in the age group 61-70 years are mainly affected. Out of the 100 isolates, gram negative bacteria accounts for (94%) while gram positive bacteria accounts for (6%). Among which E.coli is the most predominant organism isolated (77%) in both male and female followed by Pseudomonas species (6%).
